Leadership development: Post-Partum Haemorrhage in Non-Obstetrical Wards

Abstract

<p>Why the Project: During January – July 2011, postpartum patients where admitted in non-obstetrical wards, due to the high bed occupancy in the obstetric department. Although there were no Maternal Deaths in Klerksdorp Hospital due to post-partum haemorrhage since 2011, the need was identified for knowledge improvement on post-partum haemorrhage.</p> <p>Project Activities Planned:</p> <ul> <li>Project Planning using the Logic Model</li> <li>Liaising with management</li> <li>Identifying stakeholders and team members</li> <li>In-service training</li> <li>PPH kits to be developed</li> </ul> <p>Activities done:</p> <ul> <li>Project planning and setting of goals</li> <li>7 Dyad Meetings and 2 with the management</li> <li>A team was identified and meetings held.</li> <li>6 Meetings held with some stakeholders</li> <li>5 Support visits arranged with Consultant</li> <li>Taken part in coordinating the 1st Midwifery Symposium in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District</li> <li>In-service training was presented in the Gynaecological ward and in the Maternity Department</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p>Leadership Journey:</p> <p>The mentee entered a life changing Leadership Journeys as an Advanced Midwife in the Maternity Department of Klerksdorp Hospital, when she was appointed as a MCWH Programme Coordinator (first acting) at the same time as the leadership academy started. She was able to use the leadership principle in both her work and the project.</p> <p>Outcome:</p> <ul> <li>Post Evaluation done after in-service given</li> <li>Not all activities were done</li> <li>Challenges on time management vs. new responsibilities within her new post.</li> <li>Patients are no longer admitted in wards outside the Maternity Department of the Hospital.</li> </ul> <p>The presenter will continue with the project until she reached her goal. In light of her new post she also intends to implement the project in the Sub-district, to the benefit of the community.</p>
