Provider education and routine implementation of the SCOFF questionnaire on the detection of eating disorders at the primary care level: A program development project
Introduction: The detection of eating disorders has been cited as a challenge at the primary care level. Literature has shown both a lack in provider knowledge on eating disorders, as well as the routine use of a single, all-inclusive tool to identify distorted eating behaviors and habits in the primary care setting. Early detection of eating disorders is vital as they are associated with long-term and potentially fatal ramifications.
Methods: A program was created containing a ready to use, provider educational intervention, and a step-by-step method for implementation of the five question, SCOFF questionnaire to routinely screen for eating disorders in the primary care setting.
Results: Recommended data analysis measurements have been included as a part of the program for participating clinics to measure the results of implementation and evaluate overall program effectiveness.
Conclusions: This project aims to increase the rate at which eating disorders are being detected in the primary care setting leading to earlier interventions and improved patient outcomes by providing primary care clinics with an established, and effective program....
