Abstract
Background: The poor quality of many published simulation based research manuscripts has been acknowledged in the literature. This presentation will describe the development of a quality rating rubric for simulation research manuscripts. The rubric is then applied to rate 69 simulation research manuscripts published in Clinical Simulation In Nursing from 2013-2014.
Methods: The Simulation Research Rubric was developed following literature review and collaboration with experts to ensure content validity. Content validity index of the instrument is .96%. Inter-rater reliability is .92.
Results: The final rubric contains 16 elements, which are graded on a scale of 0-4. Scores were then placed within ranges to arrive at a quality rating determination. Of the 69 articles reviewed, 15 received a rating of excellent (76-100%); 47 received a rating of good (51-75%); 7 received a rating of fair (26-50%), and no articles fell below the rating of fair (0-25%).
Conclusions: This instrument provides a reliable method for grading the quality of simulation based research manuscripts.
