Objectives: Family caregivers work tirelessly to ensure their loved ones don’t need to return to the hospital after discharge. This study will examine the impact of readmission on family caregivers of children who have had ventricular peritoneal shunt (VPS) surgery and been readmitted by looking at the economic, social, familial, and personal strains of caregiving.
Methods: This study is a descriptive study. The Impact on Family Scale survey (Stein & Jessop, 1985) was used to judge if family caregivers were affected by child’s readmission.
Results: Nine responses were received, eight were analyzed because one had a missing data. Data showed 63% of caregivers had a high school diploma. Limited health literacy could be a reason for low response to questionnaire, and also result in child’s readmission.
Conclusion: Study demonstrated that there were no significant differences on caregivers’ responses in all five dimensions of impact, general, social, financial, and coping.
