Abstract
Background and objective: Interdisciplinary communication and teamwork in the health care setting are crucial for patient safety. A mental health and substance use clinic identified that poor staff satisfaction was related to inadequate communication and teamwork, affecting patient safety. Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS®) training and tools were implemented to improve multidisciplinary staff satisfaction, teamwork perceptions, and behaviors. Creating a consistent and dependable care processing method with a safer health care environment was the project goal. Methods: The Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) quality improvement (QI) method of process development was utilized within this project. Data was collected using the TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire (T-TPQ) and a staff satisfaction survey before and after implementation. The Team Performance Observation Tool (TPOT) was used to evaluate employee teamwork behaviors. Intervention: The TeamSTEPPS® framework and Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) tool were implemented to facilitate streamlining of patient handoff information. The "I am concerned," I am uncomfortable," and "this is a safety issue" (CUS) tool was used to stop the line during compromised patient safety situations. Results: A pre-and post-implementation percentage evaluation of each T-TPQ and TPOT observation question identified improvement in team function and structure, leadership, situation monitoring, mutual support, and communication. Limitations included a surge in the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) cases during implementation. Conclusion: Project results indicated that the TeamSTEPPS® implementation contributed to a positive impact on teamwork behaviors, perceptions and had a minimal measurable effect on staff satisfaction.
