Purpose: To test the effect of a muscular strength exercise program of muscular strength in older adults based on the Roy's adaptation model as an expression of the mode of interdependence of functionality in older adults.
Methods: A repeated measures quasi-experimental design with two groups, an experimental (n = 22) and a control group (n = 19) was used. Experimental conditions were: a 12-week exercise program to increase muscular strength using Thera-band elastic bands. The program is focused primarily on the lower extremities; it had three 1-hour sessions per week at a moderate intensity. Outcome variables were: Muscular strength, perceived muscular strength and life-space mobility. Measurements of the participants were done at four different moments, 4 weeks apart, during the intervention; in the initial week, in weeks 5 and 9, and at the end of the intervention.
Results: After the conclusion of the exercise program revealed significant increments in each of the seven exercises that represented the participant's muscular strength (p < .05), reflected in the effect of the interaction time by group. The intervention was effective when the maximum initial repetition for each exercise was increased. The magnitude of the effect changed with the exercised area, from 40% for leg extension to 43% for leg bending. The improvement in muscular strength had an effect on the improvement of perceived muscular strength, which in turn affected the life- space mobility (?=.130; p < .01.Vs ?=.046; p >.05). Perceived muscular strength is a mediator between the muscular strength and the life- space mobility.
Conclusion: The life- space mobility is considered as a manifestation of the interdependence role, which, in turn, is interrelated with other modes, such as the physiological mode and the self-concept mode. The self-concept mode acts as mediator between the physiological mode and the interdependence mode.
