Dr. Susan LaRocco is Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh NY. She became a nursing educator after many years in a variety of leadership positions in hospitals in Boston, New York, and Connecticut. She has published extensively, including in the American Journal of Nursing, Journal of Clinical Nursing, and Nursing Management. In 2014, she was inducted as a Fellow in the National Academies of Practice. Dr LaRocco spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in the Middle East, teaching doctoral students at the University of Jordan in Amman. Her major research interest is men in nursing, in particular the graduates of the Alexian Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, the last all-male school of nursing.

Nursing education and nursing practice in the United States is described in depth, including the number of licensed nurses and the types of educational preparation. Hospital based diploma, associate degree, and baccalaureate programs are discussed, including the changes over time. A typical baccalaureate curriculum plan is described. The NCLEX-RN exam is explained and statistics regarding number of nurses taking the exam and passing it on the first attempt are provided. Higher education is described, including the focus of master’s degree programs and the types of doctoral education. Advanced practice nursing, including descriptions of the work of nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners, is discussed. The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies are examined. Trends in nursing education and the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health are described.
