Aim: The purpose of this study was to develop and pilot an instrument to assess group synergy among nursing students.
Background/Significance:. Little is known on how to evaluate acquisition of ‘soft skills’ in nursing, including development of synergy.
Methods: Nursing faculty were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling to serve on an expert panel. Using DeVellis’ (2003) framework, three rounds of data were collected using semi-structured online surveys. The resulting scale of 34 items was piloted with undergraduate nursing students taking part in simulation scenarios.
Results: Item-CVI ranged from 0.8 to 1 for each scale item. Scale-Content Value Index Average was 0.93, whereas the Scale-Content Value Index Universal Agreement was 0.62. Exploratory factor analysis identified three factors.
Conclusion: This study suggests synergy is multifactorial and can be assessed by faculty. However, further testing of the scale is needed.
